Grade 9 Course/Instrument Choices

My son or daughter wants to learn an instrument, but has never played one before. Can they take instrumental music?

Yes, they can. They should register for course AMI1O4. This course is the Beginner Band class and is for students with no instrumental background.

My son or daughter will be taking instrumental music for the first time. How do they choose an instrument?

The main band instruments will be demonstrated to the students. They will then have an opportunity to choose first, second and third preferences for their instrument. Instruments will then be assigned based on availability and a balanced instrumentation in the class. Usually students are accommodated with their first or second choice.

My son or daughter has some previous instrumental experience. What course should they take?

They should take AMI1O. This is a course for experienced players who will continue on the instrument they have learned to play already.

My son or daughter has had previous experience on a band instrument in elementary school but would like to try a different instrument. Is that possible?

Yes. In most cases, they should register for the Beginner Band course, AMI1O4.

If the student has extensive piano background (RCM Examinations Grade 6 or higher) they may consider registering in the Experienced Band class, AMI1O, but should consult with the Head of Music before doing so. Please phone the school at 905-884-2131.

My son or daughter wants to sing. What course should they take?

They should take AMV1O. This is the Grade 9 vocal music course.

Band

Can my son or daughter join a band in Grade 9?

Yes. They may join the Grade 9 Concert Band. This group rehearses every Wednesday morning at 7:45. It begins in late September and runs until mid-May.

Do you have to audition for this band?

No. This is a voluntary co-curricular band and accepts all interested musicians.

Does the Concert Band perform a lot?

The band performs in the Holiday Serenade concert in December, at a music festival in February and at the Sounds of Spring concert in May. They may play on other occasions as requested.

My son or daughter likes sports. Can they balance band and sports?

Of course. The Music Department has an ongoing agreement with the Phys. Ed. Department that allows students to split their time when practice schedules conflict. Students may miss (sports) practices for performances and they may miss music rehearsals for sports games. This has never been a problem since both departments encourage student participation in school activities.

Other

Do you teach piano or strings?

We do not have classes for piano or string instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass).

Do you teach guitar?

We do have a Grade 10 Beginner Guitar class. Some students choose to take this in Grade 9. It is aimed at absolute beginners and is not recommended for experienced guitarists.
